NEBULISERS

A nebuliser is a machine which delivers the drugs directly into the lungs in the form of mist or aerosols.Nebulisers are useful for the patients of asthma, chest infections, lung abnormalities since birth,in many allergic reactions which lead to lung congestion etc.Through high flow oxygen or compressed gas drugs are converted into mist or aerosols (ideally smaller than 5mic metre) which easily reach the terminal parts of lungs(alveoli) where gas exchange occurs. They can be of several types

1.JET NEBULISERS: High flow oxygen or compressed air converts the drug into aerosol

2.ULTRASONIC NEBULISERS:Ultrasonic waves convert the drug into aerosol.Good to ears as they produce almost no sounds.Drug wastage can be reduced.Costlier than jet nebs.

3.VIBRATING MESH NEBULISERS: Even better than previous one.Heating of the machine reduced, less time required for drug delivery, cost more.

4.MIST INHALERS: They don't use  battery or electricity .A selected(metered) dose is converted into mist which is inhaled by patient.Fond to be good in many trials but sizes of aerosols unpredictable, not advocated for uncooperative unconscious patients.

Inspite of availability of many good quality type of nebulisers ,proper operation and drug selection as per the patient's needs remain valuable.Almost all types are easy to operate and can be easily stored for     home(domicillary) care. They are easily available for purchase and rentals. They can be life saving in many critical situations.
